Take a listen by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf and Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi.
The Prophet said that the majority may most likely be under Hidayah and gave reference to a deviating group as being comsumed by a wolf (meaning it will not last and ultimately the true Islam will succeed in the end). This concept is detailed in the later portion of this post.
The school of Abu Al-Ash'aree or The school of Maturidiyyah or The school of Ath'aree (a 3rd school some scholars have agreed on). The 4 madhabs are different and fall under these major schools.
A little info about these various schools:
Ash'ariyyah School
"The systematization of Sunni theology in the tenth century was done in reaction to the emergence of heterodox schismatic groups in previous centuries, particularly Mu'tazilah. The founder of Ash'ariyyah, Abu al-Hasan (873-935), was formerly a Mu'tazilite. He wrote a number of important books which became the foundation of Ash'arite theology such as the Kitab al-Ibanah (The Book of Elucidations) and also an extensive work on the views of various Islamic schools and sects called Maqalat al-Islamiyyin (Doctrines of the Muslims).
Another major figure in the development of Ash'arite theology was the Sufi theologian and jurist al-Ghazzali (1058-1111). Through al-Ghazzali and other prominent theologians - such as Al-Baqillani (d.1013), al-Baghdadi (d.1038), al-Djuwayni (d.1085) and al-Shahrastani (d.1153) - Ashariyyah spread throughout the Sunni Islamic world. It is now dominant in Iraq, Syria, Egypt and Northwest Africa, and has a strong presence in Central Asia and Anatolia and to a lesser extent in India and Pakistan. Along with the Maturidiyyah school of theology, Ashariyyah remains the dominant source of theology in the Sunni world."
Maturidiyyah School
"Maturidiyyah is a Sunni theological school named after its founder Abu Mansur al-Maturidi (d.944). In the Mamluk age the school came to be widely recognised as the second orthodox Sunni theological school beside Ash'ariyyah. Resident in Samarqand in Central Asia, al-Maturidi had little impact on mainstream Islamic intellectual life during his lifetime. Maturidiyyah only came to be important as a result of its acceptance by the Turkish tribes of Central Asia. The Maturidi school of theology gradually came to prevail among the Hanafite communities everywhere. Because the Turks were mostly Hanafite the Turkish expansion through the Ottoman empire enabled the Hanafite and Maturidite schools to spread throughout western Persia, Iraq, Anatolia, and Syria."
Unfortunately, I could not find much information about the 3rd Ath'aree school that some scholars have agreed to. Feel free to comment with a link or two if you find anything yourself!
Ihsan is a requirement in the path of salvation and santification (to have Ma'rifah in this lifetime) for people with the high Himmah (As'Sabiqoon), people that are constantly in Dhikr of Allah (Rememberance of Allah). Find good company of people with the same views as you.
You cannot attack a school because scholars have agreed to take positions of various madhabs based on the strength of their daleels. Most arguements that people give are based on unsound reasoning.
"Arguementation is not part of the religion." - Imam Malik
Any jidal should be with non-Muslims, and this too should be in the best way. Our job is to build and work not engage in fighting.
"Never engage in refutations."
Just listen. All people need from you is to listen to convince you about something.
"It's wrong because no one is doing it, and it's right because everyone is doing it." - This is basic ethics! But that is not always the case. You go to a place worshipping in a way different from Ahl us Sunnah wal Jam'ah but just because everyone is doing it, it is not correct!
"You want to know the truth, don't look at it by the number of people. Rather, establish proofs and then look at who is practicing it." -Democracy goes against this, you can't follow something only because of the majority views. You have to understand the daleel and proofs for it as well. Not the majority of mankind will be believers. Allah has given you 2 ears to observe knowledge, be with people who speak the best language and tell you good things. Those who are argue against you, these people are trained! Example is Jehova witnesses and you start to think "Oh that makes sense..." because they present their fallacies in convincing manners. They want you to listen and convince you about falsehood so the best thing is to not even listen because we are not scholars and their fallacies are obviously going to sound convincing to us!
As a side note, many converts feel insulted by the lack of English-speaking scholars because they are not able to communicate with them and are not reaching out to helping these people. And we know of course, this was not a quality of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam. One of the qualities of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, he would speak to every clan in their dialect and would speak in the method they preferred (meaning the highest version of their dialect). The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam knew all the languages to speak to his people, his wife brought him a shirt from Ethiopia, he replied "Sana! Sana!" which is Ethiopian for "good or nice." This proves that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam knew the languages very well and catered to his audience because he spoke in a respectful and good way.
We think that their madhabs' opinions are old-fashioned but no, major current issues such as abortions and various others are modified and scholars are discussing these topics. So we cannot say that the madhabs do not include modern issues, when in fact, they are talking about them. Always turn away from people who are set of arguing Islamic points, build your own knowledge. People, especially young people, are passionate about arguing these topics but keep in good company and do not listen to these arguements for they only cause divison and confusion among Muslims.
SubhanAllah. May Allah guide us all.
Ma'Assalama,
Hena
