Virtues of Muharram

It is narrated from Abu Huraira that the Prophet [SAWS] said, "The best fasts after (the fasts of) Ramadan are the fasts of the month of Allah, Muharram". [Reported by Muslim]

Muharram is among the four sacred months...
“Verily, the number of months with Allaah is twelve months (in a year), so it was ordained by Allaah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them, four are sacred. That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein…” [al-Tawbah 9:36]

Yaum al-Ashoora falls in this blessed month...

Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) came to Madeenah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of ‘Aashooraa’. He said, ‘What is this?’ They said, ‘This is a righteous day, it is the day when Allaah saved the Children of Israel from their enemies, so Moosa fasted on this day.’ He said, ‘We have more right to Moosa than you,’ so he fasted on that day and commanded [the Muslims] to fast on that day.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 1865).

According to a report narrated by al-Bukhaari: “… so we fast on this day to venerate it.” A version narrated by Imaam Ahmad adds: “This is the day on which the Ark settled on Mount Joodi, so Nooh fasted this day in thanksgiving.” “and commanded [the Muslims] to fast on that day” – according to another report also narrated by al-Bukhaari: “He said to his Companions: ‘You have more right to Moosa than they do, so fast on that day.' ”

Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) said: “I never saw the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) so keen to fast any day and give it priority over any other than this day, the day of ‘Aashooraa’, and this month, meaning Ramadaan.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 1867).

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “For fasting the day of ‘Aashooraa’, I hope that Allaah will accept it as expiation for the year that went before.” (Reported by Muslim, 1976).

Which day is Ashoora?
Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “ ‘Aashooraa’ and Taasoo’aa’ are two elongated names [the vowels are elongated] as is stated in books on the Arabic language. Our companions said: ‘Aashooraa’ is the tenth day of Muharram and Taasoo’aa’ is the ninth day. This is our opinion, and that of the majority of scholars. This is the apparent meaning of the ahaadeeth and is what we understand from the general wording. It is also what is usually understood by scholars of the language.” (al-Majmoo’)

Imaam al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “It expiates for all minor sins, i.e., it brings forgiveness of all sins except major sins.” Then he said (may Allaah have mercy on him): “Fasting the day of ‘Arafaah expiates for two years, and the day of ‘Aashooraa’ expiates for one year. If when a person says ‘Aameen’ it coincides with the ‘Aameen’ of the angels, he will be forgiven all his previous sins… Each one of the things that we have mentioned will bring expiation. If there are minor sins for which expiation is needed, expiation for them will be accepted; if there are no minor sins or major sins, good deeds will be added to his account and he will be raised in status… If he had committed major sins but no minor sins, we hope that his major sins will be reduced.” (al-Majmoo’ Sharh al-Muhadhdhab, part 6, Sawm Yawm ‘Arafaah).

Believing Women of Paradise

Umme Salamah narrates that she said to Rasulullah “O Rasulullah, are the women of this world superior or the hurs?” He replied, “The women of this world will have superiority over the hurs just as the outer lining of a garment has superiority over the inner lining.”

Umme Salamah then asked, “O Rasulullah, what is the reason for this?” He answered, “Because they performed salah, fasted, and worshipped [Allah]. Allah will put light on their faces and silk on their bodies. They will be fair in complexion and will wear green clothing and yellow jewelry. Their incense-burners will be made of pearls and their combs will be of gold. “

Abu Sa’id and Abu Hurayrah narrate that Rasulullah said, “[When the people will enter Jannat], a caller will announce, ‘Definitely, for you is life; you will never die. For you is good health; you will never become sick. For you is youth; you will never grow old. For you is luxury and comfort, you will never experience difficulty. Both the men and women of Jannat will remain young forever.

Wives of the believers will stay with their own husbands. Women who never married in this world will be given a choice to get married with any (unmarried) man they wish. If they do not like any of them, a special man will be created for them (similar to the hurs) and Allah will join both of them in marriage.

"Surely the men who submit and the women who submit, and the believing men and the believing women, and the obeying men and the obeying women, and the truthful men and the truthful women, and the patient men and the patient women and the humble men and the humble women, and the almsgiving men and the almsgiving women, and the fasting men and the fasting women, and the men who guard their private parts and the women who guard, and the men who remember Allah much and the women who remember -- Allah has prepared for them forgiveness and a mighty reward." (33:35)

Allah will say to the Believers, (Enter the Garden, you and your wives, you will be made glad. There will be brought round for them trays of gold and goblets, and therein is all that the souls desire and eyes find sweet and you will stay there forever. This is the garden, which you are made to inherit because of what you used to do. Therein for you is fruit in plenty whence to eat. ) (Az-Zukhruf 43: 70-73)

I know many women often wonder, men get houris in Jannah, what about us? We all think it, yet no one actually says it lol. Ask Zeynep, she knows what I'm talking about it ;)

This is something that makes every Muslim woman smile when she reads it. SubhanAllah, how just is Islam? We must keep in mind though, that yes the reward of Jannah is far greater than anything we can imagine, but the highest level of Paradise is beyond everything else. Our goal is to reach the highest station in which we cease to exist:

“When the inhabitants of Jannah enter Jannah, Allah will ask them all, ‘Is there anything more that I can give you?’ They will say, ‘Have you not illuminated our faces? Have you not entered us into Jannah? Have you not saved us from Hellfire?’
“Then Allah will uncover the veil (and all shall see Allah). After that moment there would be nothing more beloved to them than seeing their Lord" (Bukhari and Muslim).

May Allah grant us all the highest station in Jannah. Ameen.

Layla and Majnoon

"Nizami Kunjehei was one of the poets of the late 6th and early 7th century (hijri). He's one of the most famous poets of stories/poems read at parties and gatherings in Iran. He is famous for 5 books:
1. Makhzanul Asrar
2. Khusru and Shireen
3. Layli and Majnoon (they call her Layli in Farsi, Layla in Arabic)
4. Haft Paykar
5. Iskander Nameh (lifestory of Alexander the Great)

Layli and Majnoon is a Romeo and Juliet-type story.

Layli and Majnoon (not his real name, means madman) lived in the same village. They loved each other a lot, but when her father found out, he married her off to someone else in a village far away.

Majnoon was so caught up in the love of Layli and so depressed at her loss, that he used to wander the deserts and mountains. His father, seeing Majnoon's grief, was very upset and tried to research ways of removing Majnoon's grief and freeing him from the 'pain' of the love of Layli.

Majnoon's father tried to advise his son to help him overcome his grief at the loss of Layli, but the fire of the love of Layli was too strong and all the fatherly advise was forgotten.

Majnoon's father sought the counsel of his relatives who advised him to take Majnoon to Makkah and that perhaps the association with Allah will lessen his grief. But when they got to Makkah, all Majnoon prayed for was for Allah to take some years of his life and give them to Layli (i.e. prayed for her long life) and no other prayers!

When the father heard this prayer of Majnoon, he understood that the pain of the love of Layli has no cure.

Basically at the end of the story, Layli dies in childbirth. Majnoon travels to visit her grave and cries so much there that he dies too."

4 Best Women

Anas reports that the Messenger of Allaah, salla Allaahu alaihi wa sallam, said: 'The best women of mankind are four: Mariam daughter of `Imraan, Assiya wife of Pharaoh, Khadija daughter of Khuwailid, and Fatima the daughter of the Messenger of Allaah.' [Bukhari and Muslim]

Take A Moment to Think...

All right, so I don't mean to scare anyone off or anything by talking about death, but I just though it was really interesting how the following are all signs of how the believer would die. It really makes you wish that whenever your time comes, your death would happen in one of these ways:

1. Saying the Shahadah (testimony of faith that there is no deity but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah) upon death, for Al-Hakim and others stated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whose last words were, ‘There is no deity but Allah,’ will be admitted to Paradise.”

2. Dying while having sweat on the forehead, for Buraydah ibn Al-Husayb narrated that Allah’s Messenger said, “The believer dies while having sweat on his forehead.” (Ahmad and At-Tirmidhi).

3. Dying on a Friday night or day, for Allah’s Messenger said, “There is not a Muslim who dies on Friday, by day or night, but Allah safeguards him against the trial of the grave.”

4. Being martyred while fighting in the cause of Allah, dying in the way of Allah, dying of plague, dying of an abdominal disease, and dying of drowning. This is because Imam Muslim states in his authentic Book of Hadith: “Allah’s Messenger asked, “Whom do you consider a martyr?” They (the Companions) replied, “O Messenger of Allah! The one who is slain in the cause of Allah is a martyr.” He said, “(If so,) then the martyrs of my nation are few.” They asked, “O Messenger of Allah! Who are they (the martyrs) then?” He said, “The one who is slain in the cause of Allah is a martyr, the one who dies in the way of Allah is a martyr, the one who dies of plague is a martyr, the one who dies of an abdominal disease is a martyr, and the one who dies of drowning is a martyr.” In addition, the one buried alive is a martyr, for Al-Bukhari and Muslim stated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Five are martyrs: The one who dies of plague, the one who dies of an abdominal disease, the one who dies of drowning, the one who is buried alive and dies, and the one who is killed in the cause of Allah.”

5. The woman who dies in her puerperium [the period after childbirth] because of her baby or even died while being pregnant because of her baby is a martyr, for Imam Ahmad and other compilers of Hadith narrated with authentic chains of transmission that `Ubadah ibn As-Samit reported the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as saying about martyrs, “The woman who is killed by (the delivery of) her baby is a martyr; her baby will drag her with the umbilical cord to Paradise.”

6. Being killed by fire or as a result of a pleural tumor is a martyr, as stated by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while listing the kinds of martyrs.

7. Dying of tuberculosis, as the Prophet stated that whoever dies of tuberculosis is a martyr.

8. There are other kinds of martyrs indicated in the following hadith narrated by Abu Dawud, An-Nasa’i and other compilers of Hadith, in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “He who is killed while defending his property is a martyr; he who is killed while defending his religion is a martyr; and he who is killed while defending his blood is a martyr.”

9. Dying while performing sentry duty in the cause of Allah, for Imam Muslim stated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Keeping watch for a day and a night (in the cause of Allah) is better (in reward) than fasting for a whole month and standing in Prayer every night. If a person dies (while performing such a sentry duty), his (meritorious) activity will continue, he will go on receiving his reward for it perpetually, and will be saved from the torture of the grave.” The men and women of security forces and land, sea, or air border patrols must be the happiest with this hadith, regardless of their positions, provided they seek the divine reward through doing these national duties.

10. Dying while performing a righteous deed, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “He who dies upon saying ‘There is no deity but Allah,’ seeking Allah’s pleasure, will be admitted to Paradise; and he who dies upon performing a deed of charity will be admitted to Paradise” (Ahmad and other compilers of Hadith).

This is not intended to be a gloomy post, but just a reminder to make you think. People are always avoiding the topic of death because they don't like thinking about death, but once in a while, it's important to remind yourself that your time too will come. It really does open your eyes...

btw, i don't know why the colors are kind of off...just ignore them =)

Wow, it's been a long two weeks. I'm sure many people would agree. Midterms have definitely taken their toll on most people. I got through two of mine, one more and a project left and then I'll be done insha Allah =) So, anyway, I wanted to share with you guys a Hadith I really liked:

"God Almighty said: "My servant draws near to Me with nothing more loved by Me than the acts of worship that I have enjoined upon him. My servant continues to try to draw near to Me with more devotion, until I love him. When I love him, I will be his hearing with which he hears, his sight by which he sees, his hand with which he strikes, his feet on which he walks. When he asks Me for something, I will respond and when he takes refuge in Me, I will grant it to him. I do not hesitate in doing anything I intend to do as much as I hesitate in seizing the soul of My faithful servant; he hates death and I hate hurting him. But death is a must for him"." (narrated by Bukhari)

I hope you like it just as much as I do!

By the way, they were doing free Henna at Stamp today from 12-2 pm in the Baltimore Room I think. Sorry if you missed it! I just got a crescent and stars on my right hand, but it all scratched off on its own less than an hour later. Man us Desis, we're better with Henna because we usually get a good red color that lasts you a while! =)
